DOCTORS

Dr. Robin Roscoe

Robin graduated from OVC in 1985, and spent several years at a specialty exotics practice in Toronto before she returned to family roots in Ottawa. She came back to work as a veterinarian at the very same practice (Lynwood) where she had been a kennel student during her high school days!

Robin earned the special designation as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (avian) in 1994, being one of the first to receive this certification. Her credentials were renewed again in 2004 and in 2014. She is one of only 6 board certified avian specialists in Canada. In mentoring to those around her, Robin has shared a great deal of her knowledge and expertise in the fields of avian and exotic medicine and surgery.

Continuing education is very important to Robin and she regularly attends major national and international conferences, as well as local and regional lectures (ExoticsCon, Western Veterinary Conference, Association of Avian Veterinarians Conference, European Association of Avian Veterinarians Conference). Many of these are specialty programs for avian and exotic medicine and surgery, where world experts come together to share knowledge and expertise.

Dentistry has also become a great focus for Robin in recent years. She has completed additional training in dental procedures, including attendance a dental specialty teaching centre.
Outside of work, Robin enjoys spending time with her family (husband and two teenagers) outdoors, cross-country skiing, cycling, camping and canoeing. She has volunteered over the years as a beaver and cub leader, a cross-country ski coach, and a board member for the Wild Bird Care Centre. She is currently involved with the high school band parents council and the executive committee of the Ottawa Carleton Veterinary Emergency Hospital (Animal emergency).

She shares her home with Harrison (a red-bellied parrot and an excellent talker), Maple, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever, and Ginger, a ‘red-headed’ cat. As you might guess, Ginger is the boss but Harrison always gets the last word.

Dr. Tracey Poulton

Tracey graduated from OVC in 1983 and began her career working as a mixed animal veterinarian in Northern Ireland. After two years doing farm calls in the green Irish hills, she returned to Canada and spent a few years in mixed and small animal practices in southern Ontario. She moved to Ottawa in 1991 and the following year began working at Lynwood Animal Hospital.

During her childhood years, her family was always the one that had the unusual pets (snakes, iguanas, chipmunk, rabbits), so many of their neighbours were too nervous to visit their home for fear of what they might find in the living room! This paved the way for an interest in all sorts of animals.

Tracey has a special interest in surgery, dentistry, and small mammal care including dental procedures. She has fulfilled special training in dentistry, orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation therapy, ultrasonography, endoscopy, medical and surgical care for small mammals/exotics, and avian surgical procedures. She was fortunate to be one of a small international group to be able to attend a week-long course on rabbit/rodent dental care with a world renowned specialist.

In addition, she regularly attends major continuing education meetings such as the North American Veterinary conference in Orlando, ExoticsCon (combined meeting with the reptile, avian and small exotic mammal associations), the Western States Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Conference. She is a member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians.

“Knowledge of dental disease and treatments has expanded dramatically in recent years, and we want to provide the best care we can for our patients. Rabbit/rodent dentistry can be a very complicated problem that can have significant impact on our patients’ well being. Since medical knowledge is expanding so rapidly, we have to constantly work to keep up with those changes, and I like to explore new options and procedures to help my patients improve or maintain their health. In avian/exotic medicine, we are on the cutting edge of a lot of new research and information about these species, and it is exciting to be part of that.”

Tracey is married and currently has a small dog, Buster, a toy poodle mix. Buster came to her as an orthopedic patient from the Ottawa Humane Society – he was so cute, she decided to adopt him! He was a poster-boy in the OHS newsletter that year, including an adorable photo – definitely masking his true identity! He has given her a lot of insight into behaviour problems that her clients may share!

Tracey enjoys camping, canoeing, cooking, gardening and travel. She and her husband share interests in yoga, and salsa and ballroom dancing. She dabbles in a few crafts when time permits, but her favourite is cake decorating–the reward is that you get to eat your artwork!

Dr. Kristen Flegel

Dr. Kristen Flegel is a skilled and compassionate veterinarian with over 20 years of experience in the field of animal care. Growing up surrounded by dogs, cats, chickens, and horses, Dr. Flegel developed a lifelong love for animals. As a child, she always ensured the cats in heat found their way outside so more kittens could be raised in her room, much to her mother’s dismay! Her strong history of animal care and welfare was shaped by her younger years as an avid equestrian and a member of Pony Club.

Dr. Flegel’s journey into veterinary medicine began in 2001 as an equine racetrack groom and volunteer kennel attendant. After graduating with honours from the Veterinary Technician program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton in 2004, she spent over a decade working in diverse small animal roles, including general practice, emergency and critical care, and shelter medicine. Along the way, Dr. Flegel earned a Bachelor of Science with honours from the University of Waterloo, further enhancing her knowledge and commitment to the veterinary profession.

In 2013, Dr. Flegel began working at Lynwood Animal Hospital as a locum veterinary technician, gaining valuable experience within an avian and exotic animal clinical setting. She returned to the hospital in 2017, this time as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine after earning her DVM from St. George’s University. Graduating summa cum laude, Dr. Flegel was inducted into the Society of Phi Zeta, Alpha Delta Chapter, in recognition of her exceptional academic performance.

A dedicated advocate for lifelong learning, Dr. Flegel is a regular attendee at veterinary conferences, both in person and online, with a special focus on avian and exotic animal medicine. She has also pursued additional hands-on training in dental procedures for dogs, cats, and exotic companion mammals. Dr. Flegel is Fear Free™ trained and working through the Avian Clinical Competency Course by the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV).

Dr. Flegel is a member of several professional organizations, including the Association of Avian Veterinarians, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, and the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Flegel has a strong history of volunteer work with Community Veterinary Outreach and the Ottawa Humane Society, demonstrating her commitment to animal welfare both in the clinic and in the community.

At home, Dr. Flegel shares her household with her husband, two cats, Nimbus and Cheddar Goblin, but is often found at the barn with her horse, George. Outside of veterinary practice, she enjoys spending time outdoors, whether it’s camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, or traveling. Dr. Flegel also loves to read, indulge in chocolate, practice yoga and is passionate about baking and jamming, often experimenting with new recipes and sharing her creations with family and friends.

Dr. Erin Harrison

Dr. Harrison is a native of Windsor, Ontario. After earning an Honours BSc in Biological Sciences (with Great Distinction) at the University of Windsor in 2004, she completed an Honours DVM (with Distinction) at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 2008. Dr. Harrison is a proud recipient of the Katherine Long Memorial Scholarship, a peer elected award for “an individual that consistently strives to apply the highest standards of care while showing concern for the animal’s comfort and welfare”. Subsequent to graduation, Dr. Harrison worked at the OVC for four years in different capacities (intern, clinical resident/graduate student, staff clinician) in the Avian and Exotic Service, with clinical rotations in the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service (ICU). In 2013, she obtained her GDipl (Avian Medicine and Pathology) from the OVC, with a clinical emphasis on critical care and exotic companion animal medicine.

An avid participant in the education process, Dr. Harrison has presented at the Canadian Parrot Conference, BunFest, and the OVC Animal Welfare Forum. She has also lectured at the OVC to veterinary students on topics such as pain management, emergency care, behaviour, and welfare in exotic species. She has also instructed veterinary technicians in training at Georgian and Algonquin College. Furthermore, she has participated in formal and informal mentorship opportunities for veterinarians in training at the OVC.

Dr. Harrison endeavours to keep up to date by regularly attending a variety of veterinary conferences and has attended over 40 VIN continuing education courses (for credit and audited courses ranging from emergency medicine, exotic species medicine, and small animal medicine). Moreover, Dr. Harrison strives to contribute to veterinary medicine, having several papers submitted for publication in professional journals. She is also a member of a variety of veterinary associations.

Dr. Harrison professional interests include avian and exotic species emergency and critical care medicine, rabbit medicine, animal behaviour, small mammal oropharyngeal endoscopy and dentistry, and she is currently working towards ABVP Exotic Companion Mammal eligibility.

Personal interests include travel, art (assorted media), and spending time with her family, including her rabbits Allegra, Mr Peanut and Ophelia Jane, and her chihuahuas Bobby and Timbit.

Dr. Ellie Baird

Dr. Ellie Baird grew up with a menagerie of unique pets: from “colour-changing” goldfish, obese aquatic frogs, a balding hamster, a rescued renegade hedgehog, a dorm room traveling rabbit, and a delightfully ordinary family dog. These early companions ignited her interest in veterinary medicine, leading her to graduate from The Ontario Veterinary College in 2010. When asked what the highlight of her veterinary education was, she would answer her month spent exploring comparative medicine & creative caring at the Toronto Zoo.

Throughout her career to date, Dr. Baird has had the good fortune of working in diverse settings which include not only conventional primary care facilities but also in laboratories for health care and disease surveillance, and in the pet food industry. While her skills in canine and feline surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, and nutrition have been emphasized, what truly fuels her enthusiasm is the human-animal bond—the profound connection between people and their beloved pets – which she knows from personal experience is not restricted to conventional cat & dog companionship. Her love of celebrating the bond each person has with their pet is also recognized in her volunteering with Community Vet Outreach, and her current continuing education investment in her Certified Hospice & Palliative Care designation.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Baird embraces outdoor adventures with her two young boys and her husband. Camping, hiking, and exploring nature rejuvenate her spirit. Her household is a lively one, featuring a geriatric cat, a resilient three-legged farm dog, a bossy pug cross, and an overly intelligent blue heeler whom she enjoys watching over while reading avidly, preferably from the comfort of a sunny hammock. Someday she hopes to be able to travel internationally again!
Imagine then the joy Dr Baird found in joining the Lynwood Animal Hospital family, which provided the opportunity to take her years of experience with conventional pets, her excitement regarding exotic species, and her compassionate care for diverse families, all to better serve our community, in both English and French.
